The Best Viewpoints around Airole
The region around Airole offers some of the most spectacular and at the same time least known viewpoints in the Ligurian Alps. Away from the usual tourist routes, you can enjoy undisturbed moments and breathtaking panoramic views that include both the mountain landscape and the Mediterranean coast.
1. Monte Abellio (1015m)
Only about 8 kilometers from Airole rises Monte Abellio. The ascent begins directly in Airole and leads along well-marked hiking trails through the Mediterranean maquis. After about 2.5 hours of moderately challenging hiking, you reach the summit, which offers one of the most extensive panoramic views in the region.
2. Terrazza Panoramica di Fanghetto
The small village of Fanghetto, about 5 km from Airole, houses a hidden viewpoint that few visitors know. The "Terrazza Panoramica" is a small platform at the edge of the village that offers a spectacular view of the Roia Valley and the surrounding mountains.
3. Sentiero Balcone di Airole
The "Balcony Path" of Airole is a picturesque hiking trail that winds along the slopes above the village. Unlike the other viewpoints mentioned, this is a path with continuously changing views, not a single point.
4. Ruins of Castello di Airole
High above Airole tower the remains of a medieval castle. The short but steep climb to the ruins is rewarded with one of the best views of the village. Particularly impressive is the contrast between the historic stone walls in the foreground and the picturesque village below.
5. Colle di Tenda Viewpoint
For those willing to travel a bit further, the Colle di Tenda Pass (about 40 km from Airole) offers a spectacular high mountain view. This pass marks the border between the Ligurian Alps and the Maritime Alps and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of both mountain ranges.
