Festa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo

The Patronage Festival of Airole - Village Life as It Was a Hundred Years Ago

Airole

Once a year, Airole celebrates its patron saints Filippo and Giacomo with a traditional village festival. The baroque parish church on the piazza forms the center of the celebrations, blending religious tradition with Ligurian sociability.

The day begins with a solemn mass in the Church of Santi Filippo e Giacomo. In the late morning, the saints' statue is carried in a procession through the narrow village streets – passing by decorated houses and under the gaze of residents watching from windows and balconies. The procession ends back on the piazza, where the secular part of the festival begins.

Long tables are set up on the village square. There is music from a small band or local musician, bars serve drinks, and fresh bread comes from the community oven. The festival offers an opportunity to experience the village community and engage in conversation with locals – even if you don't speak Italian, you will be warmly welcomed.

For guests of Casa di Barbara, the patron saint festival is a special moment: The festival takes place directly in front of the door, on the piazza beneath the apartment. One experiences the village from its most authentic side.
